The bus rumbled along, a metal cocoon against the city’s sprawl. She was listening to her own playlist, lost in thought. A new song started. Her song.

Her jaw dropped. Her fingers fumbled with her phone, as if she could erase the sound. Her heart felt like it was going to leap out of her chest. She stared blankly at the window, the city a blur of colors.

The singer's voice was breathy, a poor echo of hers. The song sounded wrong, somehow. She felt a burning sensation in her chest. She wanted to scream, to cry, to break something. She felt a profound sense of violation.
