The phone vibrated. A notification. Her breath caught in her throat. This was it. The moment of truth. She hesitated, a strange paralysis seizing her. It buzzed again, insistent. She swiped it open, and the message popped up, the words blurring before her eyes.

A wave of heat crashed over her. She felt like she was drowning, the world shrinking, closing in. She sank into the worn armchair, the floral print suddenly suffocating.

She gripped the armrests so hard her knuckles turned white. Her jaw tightened. Her eyes flicked around the familiar room as if searching for an escape route, but there was nowhere to go.
