The silence that followed her reading of the rejection email was worse than any condemnation. Her breath hitched. Her vision blurred, and the room seemed to spin. She pressed her hand against her chest.

She felt a sharp, unexpected pain. The color drained from her face, and she sank into her chair, her body suddenly heavy. The world grew distant.

She struggled to breathe, the air thick in her throat. She closed her eyes, trying to regain control, to push the unwelcome feelings away, but the darkness was closing in.
