"That can't be true," Michael mumbled, staring at the faded photo. He’d found it tucked inside a copy of the family Bible. His great-aunt Millie, a woman everyone described as a saint, was pictured in a gambling den, laughing and holding a hand of cards.

He felt a sudden pressure in his chest. His palms were slick with sweat. He'd spent his life hearing stories of Millie’s unwavering devotion, her piety, her selflessness. The truth, laid out before him in this single photograph, was a gaping wound.

He slammed the photo shut, as if the physical act could erase the revelation.
