The old trunk in the basement smelled of must and old leather. Liam, sifting through its contents, uncovered a collection of black and white photos. His grandfather, a man who had always seemed ancient, had been a young man once, a soldier, judging by the uniform he wore. But the other pictures showed a different side.

He saw a woman, a woman who wasn't his grandmother, and the photos looked as if they were taken in a club. Liam felt his face flush. He started to sweat, his skin crawling. The carefully crafted family tales felt like a complete farce.

He wanted to throw the photos away and pretend he'd never seen them.
