From the high window, the sun cast a long shadow across the dusty floor. David clutched the letter, the paper fragile beneath his fingertips. He felt his stomach twist. He'd never sent it. He'd never told anyone.

The letter was a confession, a desperate plea for help, addressed to his college professor. Inside were the words of a young man, drowning in debt and despair. The words, so familiar, now echoed the silent fears he had buried long ago.

His chest tightened. He glanced at the window, as if expecting someone to watch him. He had convinced himself that this part of his life was behind him. The letter was a reminder of a weakness he had tried to erase. He felt a sudden, urgent need to leave the house.
