The flickering candlelight cast dancing shadows on the walls of the study. John stared at the letter, feeling a knot form in his stomach. It was addressed to his deceased father. A slow feeling of something like fear crept over him.

The letter was filled with suppressed anger, the accusations of a son who felt perpetually overshadowed. He felt his cheeks grow warm. The words themselves felt like stones in his hands. He'd never meant to express any of this.

He saw his father's face as he read it, the disapproval he was certain he would have shown. The room seemed to shrink around him, the silence amplifying the weight of his unspoken words. He felt suddenly ill.
