The spoon clattered against the cereal bowl. Sarah stared at the screen, a chill spreading through her. “Dinner at my place tonight?” The recipient? Her *daughter's* boyfriend's mother. Her face burned. Her mind raced. That text was meant for… well, someone else entirely.

She grabbed the phone, her fingers shaking as she typed a reply. She deleted it. Too casual. She tried again, crafting a different version, but her words felt clumsy and inadequate. She felt a growing panic.

She pictured the woman's reaction, the likely shared surprise. She imagined her daughter’s embarrassment, her questions, the potential fallout. A knot formed in her stomach. How could she fix this? What could she say?
