The silence was the worst part for Thomas. It amplified every creak, every groan of the metal. He bounced on the balls of his feet, unable to stay still. He was not a man who enjoyed a lack of control.

He turned to Susan, his coworker, and found her staring at the floor, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. She’d always seemed so together, so composed. Now, she looked… fragile. Her face was pale.

“Should we try the emergency phone?” he asked, his voice strained. He felt a sudden, frantic urge to do something, anything. He reached for the phone, then hesitated. He felt the blood pounding in his ears. The feeling of helplessness was almost unbearable.
