The abrupt halt had sent a jolt of energy through Alex. He checked his phone again, no signal. He felt a sudden flush of heat. The elevator was small, too small. He ran his hands over his face, trying to keep his composure.

He glanced at Susan, his coworker. She had gone completely still, her eyes wide, staring at the ceiling. She’d always been a bit… skittish. Now, she looked genuinely frightened.

“Are you alright?” he asked, his voice a strained whisper. She didn’t respond. He reached out, touching her arm gently. The skin under his fingers was cold. He felt a prickling sensation across his own skin, like a thousand tiny needles. He had to get out.
