The afternoon sun streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. Sarah's hands trembled as she clutched the email detailing Professor Moreau’s departure. It felt suddenly harder to breathe. She reread the words, each one a sharp, stinging blow.

She stood abruptly, pacing the small apartment. She needed to do something, anything, to dispel the unsettling feeling that was rapidly enveloping her. She reached for her phone, intending to call her friend, but instead found herself staring at the screen, utterly blank. Her throat felt tight, and she had the sudden urge to just close her eyes and disappear.
