The cafeteria was noisy, but for Leo, it felt strangely muted, distant. The news of Professor Schmidt’s leaving had come as a complete shock. He sat there, pushing his food around his plate. His appetite had completely vanished.

He'd spent the last year working closely with the professor on her project. Now, the future of the project – and potentially his own academic career – was shrouded in an ominous uncertainty. He felt a cold knot tighten in his gut.

He slowly stood up, pushing the barely touched plate away, and left the cafeteria. He needed some air. He needed to think.
