He found himself pacing his small apartment. The notification had come in just after lunch. The words on the screen were a blurry mess of letters. His stomach clenched with each circuit he made around the living room.

His palms were slick. He kept replaying the conversation he’d had with the boss last week. Had he said the wrong thing? Done the wrong thing?

He fumbled for his phone, scrolling through his contacts, his thumb hovering over Sarah’s name. Maybe she’d understand. She'd been through this before, hadn't she? The phone slipped out of his hand, and he stared at it, frozen.
