She blinked, surprised by the intensity of her reaction. She felt a sudden urge to get up and leave, to escape the easy familiarity in his voice.

“I was a lifeguard,” he continued, oblivious. She found herself fiddling with her pen, her fingers clumsy and unresponsive. She needed to say something, anything, but the words were stuck in her throat.
