The sun beat down on the garden, making the air heavy and still. Lisa found the letter while clearing out her grandmother’s garden shed. It was a resignation, addressed to the owner of the local bakery. It was dated 1985. The stated reason, “financial impropriety.”

Lisa's breath caught in her throat. Her grandmother had been the matriarch of the family, always honest, always straightforward. A chill went down her spine. The world around her seemed to warp.

She felt a wave of nausea, and her hands began to tremble. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She felt a rising panic that threatened to overwhelm her. She had to get inside.
