He leaned against the chipped paint of the apartment door, the flimsy wood feeling insufficient. A cold sweat slicked his palms as the words repeated themselves in his head. Across the state? Across the state? His best friend, Daniel, was leaving. The thought squeezed his stomach. He wasn't sure how to feel. He closed his eyes, picturing the empty space where Daniel's easy laughter used to fill. A dull throbbing started behind his eyes. He opened the door wider and looked out into the rainy street, suddenly feeling utterly exposed.
