The splintering crack of wood echoed through the quiet afternoon, followed by a thunderous boom that vibrated in Clara's chest. She dropped the trowel, dirt dusting from her suddenly trembling hands. Her gaze snapped towards the property line, her eyes widening as she saw it – Mrs. Henderson's ancient oak, now a sprawled mess across her lawn. “Oh, dear God,” she whispered, already imagining the ensuing chaos.

Clara moved towards her back door, a strange pressure building behind her ribs. Her breath hitched. The thought of confronting Mrs. Henderson, a woman renowned for her meticulousness, filled her with a sense of dread. She found herself fiddling with the door handle, her knuckles turning white.
