A cold sweat slicked down Marcus’s back as he stared at the letter. It had arrived just this morning, a plain envelope with his brother’s familiar, loopy handwriting. Twenty years. Twenty years since the incident, since they’d last spoken.

His fingers fumbled as he unfolded the single sheet of paper. His stomach churned. He reread the first line. The words were a direct admission, a confession of guilt. He slammed the letter onto the counter, his hand trembling.

He paced the kitchen, unable to stand still. He hadn’t thought about David in years, had deliberately buried those memories. Now they were clawing their way back to the surface, sharp and unforgiving. He needed a drink, a strong one.
