The letter lay open on the kitchen table, illuminated by the harsh overhead light. Sarah’s knuckles were white as she gripped the edge of the countertop. It was from her estranged sister, a person she hadn’t spoken to in years.

She felt a strange sensation in her stomach, a knot tightening with each word. They said they were sorry, an open admission of guilt, of long-held resentments. She paced, restless, agitated.

She went to the sink, splashing cold water on her face. The words from the letter echoed in her mind. This was a chapter of her life she had believed was closed, forever.
