"That’s… impossible." Emily’s voice wavered. The towering maple, the very one she had spent hours climbing as a child, was gone. It had vanished. She hadn't even heard the chainsaw.

A knot formed in her throat. She closed her eyes, trying to make the image disappear, to will the tree back into existence. Opening them revealed the same horrifying emptiness. Her hands were shaking uncontrollably, and she ran a hand over her face.

Her breath hitched. She walked toward the edge of the yard, the silence of the scene amplifying her bewilderment. What was she supposed to do? What had happened? The sudden vacancy seemed to mock her.
