He approached the familiar corner, ready for the welcoming sight of the sycamore. But it wasn't there. It was as if a piece of his childhood, a solid, dependable landmark, had simply vanished.

He blinked, the image not quite registering. He took a step closer, then another, his pulse quickening. He felt a tightness in his chest, a sensation of being utterly adrift.

He scanned the area, as if expecting to see the tree magically reappear. The world seemed to narrow, focusing solely on the vacant space. His hands began to tremble. His head was spinning.
