The realtor’s nonchalant mention of a "previous owner who moved under… unusual circumstances” hit me like a physical blow. A wave of heat washed over me, followed by a bone-deep cold. I felt an urgent need to leave, to escape the confines of this house.

I stared at the pristine kitchen, the gleaming countertops now appearing tainted. The space I envisioned filled with warmth and cooking was now, instead, cold and empty. I swallowed hard, the muscles in my throat tightening.

“So, what happened?” I managed, my voice strained. The realtor's response was evasive, but the unsettling silence that followed was far more revealing. My hands, I noticed, were trembling. I excused myself and went outside, desperate for the cool air, and to escape the confines of the house.
