The thought of confiding in *him* felt like a betrayal of everything I had ever known. The sterile office, the bland decor, and his calm, professional demeanor were all a facade. As he smiled at me and gestured for me to sit, a cold sweat broke out on my forehead.

I forced a smile, but my stomach twisted into a painful knot. This couldn’t be happening. His eyes, the same ones that had once held such disdain, now held…what? Sympathy? He was smiling, but there was a flicker of something in his eyes, something I couldn't quite place, and I felt a sudden, desperate urge to leave.
