He found the passbook in his wife's jewelry box. It was a faded, unassuming thing, tucked beneath a pile of costume jewelry. Thomas stared at the small booklet, his chest constricted. The dates, the deposits… a whole separate life he hadn't known existed.

A tremor ran through him. He sank onto the bed, the passbook lying open in his lap. The details blurred, a jumble of figures that represented years of secret accumulation. He felt a deep, unsettling confusion.

The thought of her, planning, saving, without him… it was a blow. He got up and started pacing. He didn't know what to feel other than a profound sense of… something. He just knew he was going to need a drink.
