He found the note taped to his door. It was handwritten, scrawled, and anonymous. It read, “Quiet down, you’re making too much noise.” John felt a jolt of shock, then anger. But then, a creeping unease.

He wasn't sure what noise the note was referring to. He wasn't even home that much. He turned the note over and over in his hands, examining it. The handwriting was unfamiliar.

He went inside and locked the deadbolt. He checked the windows. He double-checked the locks. He glanced at the curtains. He was no longer safe. The feeling settled deep in his stomach.
