He slammed the lid shut, the sound echoing in the empty apartment. He'd been looking for old photos, not this. His father's handwriting, bold and confident, listed activities that were nothing like the quiet, reserved man he'd known. "Steal a kiss from a stranger?" His chest felt tight.

He threw the notebook onto the coffee table. He felt a tremor in his hands. “Climb Mount Everest”. His father? The man who preferred gardening to any physical exertion? It didn’t make sense, none of it.

He picked it back up, his stomach clenching. "Learn to speak fluent French." The man who never travelled outside of their home state? This was unsettling.
