He paced his living room, the worn rug doing little to soften his steps. The discovery had been accidental – a glimpse through an open window at a party. The sheer opulence of the interior, the artwork, the furniture... It was unlike anything he’d ever witnessed.

His fingers ran through his hair, a gesture of agitation. He found himself looking at his own possessions with sudden disdain. His comfortable, familiar surroundings now seemed drab, inadequate.

The thought of facing them, chatting over the fence, felt suddenly unbearable. He avoided eye contact in the grocery store.
