The news reporter on the television crackled, her voice a monotone recitation of the facts. Sarah chewed on her thumbnail, the metal taste a familiar comfort. Her hands trembled, making her coffee slosh dangerously close to the edge of her mug. The news was bad. Very bad.

She’d spent years at this college. Building a life. Friends. A future. Now, it was crumbling.

Her phone buzzed. A text from her roommate, a single question mark. Sarah typed back a curt response. The reporter droned on. Sarah stood up, walked to the window, and stared at the campus, the last rays of sunlight hitting the brick buildings. It was almost over.
