The email arrived during her shift at the coffee shop. Evelyn dropped the steaming latte she was making, splattering hot coffee across the counter. The barista beside her yelped. She didn’t apologize. She just stared at the screen, her eyes wide.

The usual cheerful music playing in the background suddenly sounded grating. The aroma of coffee, usually so inviting, now made her feel nauseous.

She felt a strange sensation, like a black hole opening up in her chest. She needed to get out.
