It felt like a punch to the gut when Mrs. Rodriguez, a known gossip, floated the idea of planting a communal garden in her yard. "It would be so lovely," she said, her voice dripping with insincerity. But her gaze, sharp and assessing, was the true tell.

Panic seized him. He hated the idea of people constantly on his property. His precious privacy felt under siege. He saw their faces, the unwanted conversations, their judgements. His perfectly peaceful mornings were now at risk.

His hands clenched into fists. He managed a strained smile, a shield against her intrusion. “I… I have plans for the space,” he said, the lie tasting like ash in his mouth. He felt the blood draining from his face, leaving him cold and weak.
