The insistent hammering on the door, followed by Mr. Evans' jovial announcement about a community garden, caused a sickening lurch in Julia’s gut. She felt a wave of dizziness wash over her.

She pictured the children, the noise, the potential for unwanted intrusion. Her meticulously planned life was at risk. Her tranquil world felt threatened.

Her vision swam. She mumbled something about not being the right person, the words sounding hollow and pathetic. She forced a smile. As Mr. Evans spoke, the world around her began to shrink, the walls seeming to close in.
