The phone felt heavy in her hand. Sarah had been on the verge of calling her mother for hours, needing to know what was going on. Her mother had texted her a simple message: "Come over, we need to talk." The anticipation had been eating her alive.

Finally, she took a deep breath and dialed the number. The phone rang three times before her mother answered. Her mother's tone was measured. Sarah felt a strange lightness in her limbs.

“So, honey,” her mother said, her voice strained. “Your brother’s decided… to explore Judaism.” Sarah felt a strong urge to get out of the house.
