The air in the restaurant was thick with the scent of garlic and simmering sauces, but he barely registered it. He picked at his food, pushing the pasta around his plate. The unauthorized biography haunted his thoughts. His waiter asked if everything was all right, but he just nodded, offering a tight, forced smile. The book, the book, the book. It had become a physical weight, pressing down on him. He felt a need to escape, to vanish, before the lies became truth. He abruptly stood up and left.
