The morning light, usually gentle, felt sharp against the back of his eyes. Jake woke with a jolt, the sudden burst of noise from next door having invaded his dream state. Every nerve ending seemed to be tingling.

He sat up in bed, his heart pounding. The world felt suddenly too loud, too bright. He could hear every bird chirping, every car passing on the street. He felt a desperate urge to maintain control. He needed to understand what was happening, to assess the situation.

He quickly dressed, his movements jerky and precise. He needed to investigate. He needed to see. The need was powerful.
