“Well, this is unexpected,” Robert muttered, his voice barely audible above the rising wind. He stood at the edge of his property, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. The chain-link fence, shimmering in the fading light, looked stark and unwelcoming.

His eyes darted back and forth. The air had taken on a thin, brittle quality. He felt like he needed to prepare for something, though he didn't know what. He took a deep breath, trying to slow his rapid pulse.

He watched the last worker pack up his tools. Was this the end of the project? What had just happened here? He needed to find out.
