The hum of the television, usually a source of comfort, grated on Ethan's nerves. He stood in the doorway of the living room, watching his father scroll through channels, and his leg bounced. He had to be doing something.

He cleared his throat. "Can I borrow the car?"

His father looked up, surprised. "Sure, why?"

Ethan shrugged, already reaching for his keys. "Just... need to get out."

The words felt inadequate, an insufficient explanation for the restless energy swirling inside him. He needed speed, motion, a change of scenery.
