“Riley, we’re going to need you at center field today,” the team captain said, his voice unusually grave. Riley felt a sudden sharpness. The stadium lights seemed brighter, casting long shadows across the green. Her eyes snapped from one potential target to the next. The captain paused and offered a slight smile, which she returned.
