The air crackled with a strange energy. Her senses were heightened, almost hyperactive. Every detail – the scent of lilies, the rustle of silk dresses, the cadence of conversations – registered with an unusual intensity. The vibrant hues of the floral arrangements seemed to pulsate.

She caught sight of him near the entrance, and every muscle tensed. She instinctively straightened her spine, smoothing the front of her dress. She took a breath, attempting to project an image of composure.
