A cold sweat slicked down Ethan's back as he stared at the email. It was from a colleague, forwarded to him by mistake. It showed a screenshot of a social media profile. The person on the profile was Olivia, his "doctor" friend. Except the photo showed Olivia, in a completely different city, wearing a chef’s hat and apron and standing behind a food stall.

Ethan’s breathing became shallow. He re-read the email, his eyes darting back and forth. All those late-night calls, those tales of grueling shifts, those discussions about complicated medical procedures, they were all lies. The world seemed to shrink around him.

He slammed his laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the sudden quiet. He needed to find out what was going on. He grabbed his keys, and made a bee-line for the door.
