The humidity in the air felt suffocating as Alex walked towards the building. He'd been told that Chris, his roommate, had just been promoted. But as he passed, he saw Chris inside, working at a car wash. He didn't recognise the face, the job looked alien, and his stomach felt heavy.

He had always thought that Chris was a financial analyst, always talking about spreadsheets and complex market trends. The sight of him, soapy and wet, was unsettling. He felt a cold shiver run down his spine.

Alex slowed his pace, the scent of soap and wax filling his nostrils. His hands were beginning to clench, a quiet sort of dread starting to fill him. He felt like he didn't know his friend at all.
