The afternoon light filtered through the blinds, casting stripes across the floor. Laura, perched on the edge of the guest bed, held her breath as she lifted the lid of the box. She had known about this box for years, and now it was time.

She began to rifle through the contents. A math test here, a science project there. Her gaze then fell on a small, leather-bound diary. She had forgotten all about it. Her hands began to shake as she carefully opened the cover.
