Her breath hitched in her throat as she saw the notification pop up on her phone. Her pulse sped up. She was sitting in a crowded cafe, enjoying a latte. The chatter of other patrons faded into background noise as she focused on the glowing screen. From David Miller. She could still hear the echoes of his cruel laughter in her mind.

She unconsciously gripped her cup. The warmth did little to soothe the cold spreading through her. She ran through a mental checklist of possible reasons. Maybe a mistake? A prank? She felt a sudden urge to get out, to go somewhere safe.

She watched the other people moving around her. Their mundane activities felt alien, detached from the intensity she was experiencing. She closed her eyes for a moment, then, with a decisive movement, she pulled her phone closer to her face and clicked on the profile picture.
