The newspaper's scathing words, "a culinary graveyard," echoed in Elias's ears. He felt a tremor in his hands as he folded the paper, the print smudging under his nervous touch. He was acutely aware of the throbbing in his temples. He needed to do something, anything.

He paced the cramped kitchen of "The Gilded Spoon," each step a restless energy unleashed. The stale scent of yesterday's dishes hung in the air. He checked the oven, re-checked the stovetop, and then meticulously polished a single copper pot. He had to prove the critic wrong, to silence the doubt that was bubbling up inside him.
