He felt a pull in his gut, a prickling sensation across his skin as he approached the mailbox. The air tasted charged. He checked the mail, his fingers brushing against something stiff and unfamiliar. His heart sped up. An unsigned birthday card.

He didn’t recognize the handwriting, which was a flowery script. The feeling of unease intensified. He clenched his jaw, his eyes quickly scanning the street, the houses on either side. He thought about throwing the card away without opening it, but curiosity won.

He took the card inside, the silence of the house suddenly unsettling. He sat at the kitchen table, the card resting on the surface. He felt a need to solve this mystery.
