Gemotions

The air crackled with a strange intensity. Amelia found herself breathing shallow, quick breaths as she neared the mailbox. She felt a constant need to check the surroundings, her eyes constantly moving. A single card lay amongst the usual junk mail.

The words "Happy Birthday" were printed in a bold, almost aggressive font. No signature. Her mind raced, a flurry of unanswered questions. She walked back to her house, but did not go inside. She circled the building, then approached again.

She reached for her phone. She felt an urgent need to talk to someone, anyone. The street was too quiet. Too empty.
