The cafe buzzed with the late afternoon crowd, but Maya barely noticed. Every sense was heightened, every sound amplified. She traced the rim of her coffee cup with a fingertip, a small, rhythmic motion that kept her grounded. Across from her, a man named Ethan, handsome and charming, was regaling her with a tale of a disastrous ski trip. He was laughing, and she found herself smiling, but underneath, a strange tension coiled in her stomach.

“And then, the lift broke down!” Ethan finished, his eyes sparkling. Maya nodded, but her gaze kept drifting towards the entrance. She saw someone, a woman with fiery red hair, walking toward their table. There was a moment where time seemed to slow, everything crystallizing into a single, sharp focus. The woman, clearly flustered, was heading straight for their table.

“Ethan,” the woman said, her voice tight. “What are you doing here?”
