He'd told her he was a "project manager" for a "major tech company." She, Sophia, had been flattered. Now, as they stood together, sharing a delicious ice cream cone on the pier, a sudden prickling sensation ran up the back of her neck. She looked up, and there he was. The man from the farmers market. The man who'd gushed over her sunflowers just last weekend. He looked startled.

His eyes widened, and he seemed to stutter. He was with a woman. She was holding his hand. The woman looked directly at Sophia, and her eyes narrowed slightly.

Sophia could feel her pulse drumming against her ribs. She took a step back, her grip tightening on the melting ice cream. "James?" she asked, her voice thin.
