A cold sweat slicked down Marcus’s back. He’d barely set foot outside when he saw the blur of fur and the flash of white teeth. This time, it was different. The dog looked…bigger. More determined.

His breath hitched as he scanned the yard, searching for a weapon, any kind of defense. The fallen rake lay near the shed. He made his way there.

He didn’t want a confrontation. He just wanted to get to the grocery store before they ran out of his favorite yogurt. A strange buzzing filled his ears.
