The fluorescent lights of the locker room hummed, a monotonous drone that did nothing to soothe the tension in my chest. Each click of the lock on my locker was loud, a percussive announcement. I had triple-checked that all the equipment was packed. Every detail, every thread, every tie, every knot. I just wanted to leave now.

The door creaked open, and Coach Davis's shadow fell across my locker. I straightened up. My vision sharpened. This was it.
