"So… it seems there's been a mix-up." Sarah’s professor’s voice echoed in the small office, each word like a tiny hammer blow. Sarah was seated opposite him. The office was small and poorly ventilated. She felt like she couldn't breathe.

Her hands were clasped so tightly they ached. The scholarship, the very thing that allowed her to dream big, was destined for someone else. Her stomach clenched.

She listened to the professor speak, his words a meaningless drone. She felt detached, as if she were watching herself from outside her body. She needed to understand what this meant for her.
